This model French pistol was copied by the United States as the basis for the Model 1799 North and Cheney flintlock pistol, which was the first U.S. martial pistol produced. Tapered round smoothbore steel barrel marked with partial indistinct French proofmarks on left side, near breech. Tang inscribed "M. 1777". Brass frame with lock on left side, brass pan and reinforced cock. Stamped with French proof left of pan and frame inscribed "Charleville" below cock. Brass buttcap and triggerguard, steel belthook mounted on left side. Replaced steel ramrod in the correct style. Walnut grip with spurious "US" stamped on right side, near frame. Good condition, barrel retains a dark patina overall with some scattered freckling and some wear. Frame and brass components have an applied dark finish with some lighter areas and scattered marks from use. Grip very good, as sanded and refinished, with some light scattered marks.
