This is the New Model 1859 carbine with iron furniture, and patchbox. Approximately 30,000 were manufactured with most seeing heavy service in the Civil War. The 1859 Model was in production at the start of the war. Four of the cavalry units armed with the Sharps in the fall of 1861 were the 1st Illinois, 1st New York, and the 1st and 3rd Pennsylvania. Standard features include round barrel, blade front sight, Lawrence folding rear sight, walnut stock, iron patchbox on right side, tape primer system. Model number is stamped on breech. Right side of frame has the "R.S. Lawrence 1859" stamp. Original nipple is worn. "A.H.K." stamped on right side of saddle bar (Albert Harliegh Kirkham). Metal is basically a grey-brown deep patina with a small area of salt and pepper corrosion on the right frame bump. Legends are sharp. Wood is very good to excellent. Strong rifling. These early Sharps carbines saw five full years of war and seldom survived with any condition; this is a good example.
