William Evans began by working for James Purdey prior to 1871, and then for Holland and Holland until 1883, when he opened his own business. He moved to the location at 63 Pall Mall in 1888. In 1910, he was appointed as gun maker to The Duke of Connaught, who was Queen Victoria's third son. The company is still in business and making guns to today. Twin blued barrels with solid rib with extension and marked "WILLIAM EVANS, 63 PALL MALL, ST. JAMES'S. LONDON" with engraved breeches and single silver bead. Case hardened and English scroll engraved boxlock actions with blued plate on bottom, both sides "WILLIAM EVANS", blued and engraved accents. Features include double triggers, ejectors, and automatic thumb safeties with gold inlaid "SAFE". Figured walnut straight buttstock with serrated buttplate and checkered wrist, engraved panels behind each action. Plain checkered walnut splinter forearm with Anson release. The shotgun also includes a copy of a factory letter from William Evans Gun & Rifle Makers in London, and confirms, by serial number, that the shotgun was built in 1914 for Mr. A. Mason Jones, who was left handed. It confirms that the shotgun is still in the configuration in which it left the shop. Complete with reproduction brown leather case with Griffin & Howe label, but also includes a reproduction black leather and gilt label for William Evans. Partitioned burgundy wool interior with oil bottle, snap caps, cleaning rod, and cleaning tools. Excellent condition, barrels retain about 98% original blued finish with some light wear at breeches and a few light storage marks. Actions retain 98% plus bright case colors, fire blued accents retain 70-80% blued finish with some wear on trigger guard tang, safety, and top of opener. Stocks excellent with a few minor areas of marred checks and light storage marks. Case is excellent with a few scattered light storage marks. This is an amazing specimen in original and excellent condition, has seen very little use.
