Manufactured in 1882. This large caliber carbine was very popular with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and many were ordered and specially marked for this service. This is a British export gun and was very popular with officers for hunting Tigers in India. Barrel has the Crown over V stamp. This special mark was a designation for Express rifle barrels from 1887-1904. Features: 22” barrel, blue finish, single barrel band, steel fore end cap, post front sight, folding ladder rear sight, blue finish, walnut stock with carbine butt and a saddle ring with stud, The Winchester Model 1876 was an extremely popular big bore express lever action rifle in India in the powerful 45-75 cartridge during the latter half of the century. The barrel and frame retain approximately 80-85% blue thinning and mixing with plum to a lovely homogeneous appearance. The round barrel has sharp legends. The walnut stock and full length fore- end are in excellent condition, proud to medal with usual minor nicks and bruises. The buttplate is stamped with number 53 that could have been an English military unit and would indicate hunting use by a British officer. The action is perfect and has a strong bore. Left side of forend has nine “kill” notches. This is a prime example of a scarce Winchester model 1876 Carbine with same fabled British history.
