Matching two barrel sets are rare, three barrel sets impossible and four barrel sets are unheard of. Not a single example is featured in Art Phelps book on the Merwin revolver. This is a standard 1870-80’s .38 caliber five shot with fluted cylinders, double action with ivory bird's head grip and skull cracker. Factory nickel finish with blued trigger guard and solid case colored hammer. It comes with a 2.5, 3.5, 4.5 and 5.5” barrels , each numbered “856” as is the cylinder. All have nice clean strong rifled bores. The 4.5” barrel seems like it was the one that was used with frame and retains about 75% original factory nickel while the others retain 90% plus, all with razor sharp legends. The cylinder retains about 80% nickel and the frame is about 70%, both with blending patina and some age freckling. Action is near perfect. Lock up is tight. Comes housed in a re-lined leather case that has some age to it. If you collect Merwin handguns, this may be your only chance to ever own a nice clean and all matching four barrel set.
