November 3-4, 2017 Firearms & Militaria
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/4/2017
According to the definitive book on “Volcanic Repeating Arms” by Lewis & Rutter page 31-34, this is a Type 2 which first appeared on the market in 1854 and sold out to the New Haven Arms company soon after. The serial number is 219H which means the gun was assembled by New Haven but parts made by S&W. You will find the number “219” stamped on both of the walnut grip panels. This number is also stamped on the link, lever, both side plates, grip frame and lifter arm. The trigger ring does not have the spur and there is no sign that it was ever removed. Grips are Rosewood. Iron frame is factory finished in the brown, not blue. It is currently a smooth brown-gray patina. Engraving on the frame is standard and sharp. It sports standard 4” barrel and is in .31 caliber, six shot “Rocket Ball” where the charge is in the base of lead projectile. Left side of barrel is stamped “PATENT Feb. 14, 1854”. Top of barrel is stamped “SMITH & WESSON NORWICH CT”. Right side is stamped “CAST STEEL”. Has type 2 square ejector cut out and no screw on bottom of frame (correct). The grips are excellent and have generous amounts of original varnish. Operates perfectly single action when hammer is cocked first. Fine bore is clean and rifling is visible as original. Lever retaining spring is weak. Legends are sharp. These Smith Repeating Pistols are so rare that most collectors have never even seen one and are far scarcer than the Volcanic models. This example is 100% original inside and out and extremely sharp and clean. Included in this lot are two original cartridges which are as rare as the gun itself.
