This light weight single shot rifle was probably made by Granville Henry, who was the brother of B. Tyler Henry, inventor of the lever action Henry rifle. The Henry family was instrumental in early American gun making during the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, the Civil War and in western expansion. This design was probably patented in 1872 and it is estimated that 1,000 or less were made in Pennsylvania, most unmarked, like this example. Round rifled two-stage heavy barrel with hooded front sight and adjustable rear peep sight mounted on action tang. The rifle is loaded by cocking the hammer and swiveling the barrel to the left, to be loaded with a centerfire cartridge. Back action lock is unmarked, features double set triggers. Two piece figured maple stock with checkering, probably added during period of use, and a German silver end-cap on forearm. Barrel retained by wedge on forearm and steel furniture, including a military-style two-piece patchbox. Complete with an article from American Rifleman regarding these rifles, it is called "A Rifle From Another Henry" and was written by Ben Johnson and discusses the details of these rifles. Very good condition, barrel retains an even brown patina, action and lock have been cleaned and now retain a freckled light grey patina. Triggerguard has been repaired. Stock very good, as cleaned and refinished, with scattered marks from use. Action is tight but hammer does not stay cocked. This is a rare opportunity to own a unique rifle from the famous Henry family!
