George Tryon worked in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Probably circa 1820, this example, possibly made as a trade rifle, features a tapered octagonal smoothbore steel barrel stamped "TRYON-PHILADA" on top flat, with double-line borders on each side and oval Liege proof mark. Barrel retained by three brass barrel keys. Flat stamp engraved lockplate marked "LONDON/WARRANTED" in center. Brass furniture includes a full sideplate with engraved decoration around rear lock screw. Small vacant silver wrist escutcheon with rocker panel engraved border. Full-length partially figured maple stock of typical Philadelphia area form. Hickory ramrod appears to be original. Very good condition with dark patina on barrel, some edge wear, markings clear, some freckling around breech and scattered marks. Lock retains a bright polished surface and has been professionally reconverted. Brass is polished and shows little wear, engraving is sharp. Stock excellent with a few scattered marks from use and a few age cracks, along forend, some minor chipping around lockplate. Overall, a very attractive rifle with nice form.
