The serial number on this rifle places production prior to World War I and made in 1915, which corresponds with the barrel that is dated "11-15". This rifle is all original as it was produced in 1915 having never gone through any post World War I rebuilt programs. Early features include the high polish factory finish, straight bolt, early knurled and dished rear battle sight with period P. J. O’Hare rare sight. The early high hump short sighting groove forend and has a wide finger groove stock with single rear bolt reinforcement. Has all milled parts. The bottom of the stock has the serif proof "P" in circle. Left side has the inspector "J. S. A." in box. Joseph S. Adams who worked with Springfield beginning 1887-1894. The book of Military inspector marks lists this cartouche as a no 5. Metal on this rifle is excellent and all original, overall retaining 85-90% of the original blue finish with metal forend. Even the sling swivels and bands retain the majority of their original high polish blue finish. The buttplate is fine checkered steel. Perfect action and fine thin bore. It would be extremely difficult to find a better condition, milled, circa 1915, Springfield rifle.
