The factory letter lists this rifle, serial no. 1673, as being shipped on November 5, 1896 and returned for some reason on December 4th by C.W. Cullen & Co. No record of reason for the return or consequence. It was shipped as a standard rifle, round barrel, plain trigger and standard walnut stocks with rifle butt. Finding a nice, fine condition, Flat Side Winchester Model 1895 is difficult. Finding one in .30-40 Krag is even more difficult as the majority of these rifles came in .38 and .40 caliber. Standard features include: full round barrel, sporting sights, blue finish with case colored hammer and rifle buttplate. The barrel retains approximately 80% original blue with razor sharp legends mixing with patina and some scattered small storage scratches. The top of the frame and high edges have silvered out but the frame itself on the sides still retains the majority of the brilliant Winchester high polished blue finish with generous amounts of blue on bolt and lever. Magazine is a soft brown patina. Stocks are excellent, proud to metal with original finish. Traces of color on the hammer. Perfect action. Beautiful bore. Very nice example of a hard to find, early antique Flat Side with the factory letter.
