During World War II, military cooperation with Germany and a shortage of standard Mauser K98k rifles within the German army led to modifications of the Hungarian 35M. It was rechambered to the standard German 7.92×57 cartridge with a fully enclosed flush magazine, the bolt handle was made angled, the bayonet socket was changed to accept German bayonets and some alterations was made to the sling mount. In addition, the rifle was adopted to use standard Mauser 5-round charger clips and its sights were recalibrated to match the ballistics of the 7.92mm IS cartridge. In German service this modified weapon was known as the G98/40. Serial no. "1643" can be found stamped on frame, bolt, trigger guard, floor plate, stock, safety, bolt, knob, rear barrel band and front band. The year of manufacture "1942" is stamped on the bridge. The eagle with swastika can be found on the metal parts as well as the stock. Factory code "jhv" is stamped on receiver bridge and the stock as well. This code indicating rifle manufacture in Budapest, Hungary where the original Model 35 was manufactured. The crude butt plate on this rifle is rather corroded but the balance of the metal, a high polish commercial blue finish, is 70% intact. All legends perfect. Side of frame stamped "G98/40" with a very good to excellent stock and all proper marks. These German military weapons are extremely difficult to find and seldom seen.
