Probably circa 1850. Straight, single-fullered blade with etched scrolls, oak leaves, and arms motifs. Right side marked "Ames Mfg Co/Chicopee/Mass" near ricasso. Nickel-plated cast brass guard featuring a relief patriotic eagle on the counterguard on right side. Nickel-plated knights helmet pommel is connected to guard with double chain. Fluted bone grip with ferrule at base. Nickel-plated brass scabbard with stud, and engraved designs of foliage. For an identical example, see pages 295 and 296 of "Civil War Army Swords" by John H. Thillmann. Excellent condition, as re-nickeled, probably during period of use. Blade shows some light scratches, and light wear to engraving beneath finish. Pommel is slightly loose, grip retains a nice yellow patina. Scabbard has a few minor dents on the back side. Overall, sword retains almost all of its finish and shows little wear. This is a scarcely encountered militia sword.
