This sword is made with an imported blade in the Militia Staff form. Tapered triangular blade with engraved designs of foliate, crossed cannons, and other arms motifs, reverse inscribed "SHR" on ricasso. The cast and chased guard features a large shell with a bust of George Washington framed by two swords, a wreath, and "W" on both sides. The hilt also features an eagle head quillon, and knuckle bow with relief designs. Indian princess pommel showing great detail, and mother-of-pearl grips wrapped with braided brass wire, acanthus leaf decorated ferrule at base. Black leather scabbard with chased brass mounts and cast and chased frog stud. Excellent condition overall. Blade retains a spotted gray patina with traces of gilt finish in engraved designs. Hilt retains about 40-50% of gilt finish and shows very little wear. Grip scales are excellent, with only a few tiny chips near top on right side. Scabbard is excellent with some minor scuffs and crazing to surface. Mounts retain an unpolished patina. This sword was photographed for the book "Civil War Army Swords" by John H. Thillmann, and is shown courtesy of Tom Collison on page 548.
