Frank Friday Fletcher was born in 1855 and lived until 1928, he was a U.S. Navy Admiral and was awarded the highest U.S. military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions at the Battle of Veracruz in Mexico. He was a four star admiral and the Fletcher-class destroyer was named after him. He also received the Navy Distinguished Service Medal. Fletcher designed the mechanism for the Fletcher Naval Gun, which was used in the Spanish American War. This important mug was made using the first cartridge fired in the gun that he designed. This mug reads "THE/CARTRIDGE CASE/FIRST FIRED/IN 3" Fletcher Naval Landing Gun./MAY 15TH, 1894./STANDBY!" on one side and "PRESENTED/TO/Lieut. F. F. Fletcher, U.S. Navy/Feb. 26, 1895." on the other side with a detailed anchor below. The top of the rim features a relief rope chain design and the applied handle features detailed chiseled floral designs. The bottom of the shell casing is marked "MANUFACTURED BY WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S./3-94." The entire mug is silver plated and the presentation was inscribed in a very professional manner. This is a rare opportunity to own an extremely historic and attractive item.
