George Feder worked in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania in the early 19th century. This rifle probably dates about 1815. Octagonal steel barrel signed "G Feder" in script on top flat. Flat lockplate stamped "LONDON / WARRANTED". Brass furniture includes a four piece brass patchbox with rocker panel engraving and engraved borders. The flat sideplate is in the Lancaster style. Silver oval wrist escutcheon engraved with an edelweiss, half moon with man's face inlaid in silver above cheek piece. Full length plain maple buttstock of familiar Dauphin County form with incised lines on each side of forend terminating in scroll designs on each side. Barrel retains a mostly brown patina with some spotting and scattered marks, some minor corrosion at breech. Signature is excellent. Lock has been professionally reconverted to flintlock configuration, lock retains a grey spotted patina with partially visible markings. Brass retains a mellow patina with some darker spots. Toeplate is missing a small piece at the back. Stock retains much of original red finish with a few scattered marks and a small area professionally replaced underneath lockplate. Overall, this is a very nice flintlock rifle and has a very good original look.
