Harper's Ferry Arsenal manufactured 11,060 rifled and sighted muskets between 1857 and 1859. Round rifled steel barrel with bayonet lug mounted on bottom, near muzzle and breech stamped with "AR / P" and "V / P" over an eagle's head. Fitted with a Model 1855 long-range musket sight on top, forward of breech, adjustable graduated sight from 100 to 400 yards and leaf from 500 to 800 yards. Flat percussion lockplate with beveled edges, center stamped with eagle over a "US" and "HARPERS / FERRY / 1847" vertically on tail. Standard Model 1842 steel furniture, buttplate tang stamped "US". Full-length walnut stock. Deeply cupped trumpet head steel ramrod is shaped to accommodate the conical minnie ball. All steel components have been heavily cleaned and retain a brightly polished surface with some scattered marks and some corrosion at breech. Markings are very good. Stock is very good with a few scattered marks. This is a very nice example of a scarce and historic early rifled musket.
