Straight double edge convex blade with three-paneled fullers on each side, one side of ricasso stamped with an eagle over "N.P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD", the other "UNITED / STATES / 1841 / -W-". Solid one-piece cast brass hilt with scaled grip with three steel pins retaining blade. Both sides of pommel feature an American eagle clenching arrows and an olive branch. Guard marked with "W.S." inspector's mark on bottom, on one side of blade and ""MPE. / ORD." on the other. Blade very good with a spotted grey patina and clear markings. Hilt polished and very good with sharp edges and a few light marks from use. This is an outstanding example of the first government contracted Ames sword.
