Manufactured 1874. This revolver left the factory as an Ainsworth inspected U.S. issue cavalry revolver. During its lifetime, both the barrel and cylinder were replaced. As to whether this was done inside the factory, by a military arsenal or by a private individual is purely speculation. The frame, trigger guard and backstrap are all numbered "8530". There is an Ainsworth inspector stamp on the trigger guard. The cylinder is numbered "5377" and has an Ainsworth inspector stamp and falls with in the Custer range. The barrel is numbered "8566" and is not military inspected. Barrel has one line address with serifs. Left side of frame has two line patent date with U.S. stamp. The barrel retains flashes of blue and is stamped "CS". Balance of gun is basically grey patina. The one-piece grips are very good, slightly shy to metal with cartouche. Indexes and locks up fine with a strong, clean bore.
