Hacker Martin was born in 1895 and lived until 1970 near Grays Station, Tennessee. He is credited for continuing the traditional method of making Kentucky rifles and pistols completely by hand, using tools that he made himself. He learned the art of Appalachian gunsmithing from his grandfather and made his first gun stock at age 14 out of a pillar from his grandfather's porch. He was recognized by the Smithsonian for continuing the tradition of muzzle loading rifle making. This example features a rifled two-stage steel barrel stamped "HACKER MARTIN" on the top flat. Diminutive front and rear sights. Flat handmade flintlock mechanism and lockplate. Hand crafted and filed plain brass furniture includes buttcap, trigger guard, full sideplate, ramrod ferrules and nosecap. Full length partially figured stock with two silver inlays on each side of forend and an oval escutcheon on wrist. Wooden ramrod. Very good condition, barrel retains a dark grey patina with some edge wear and scattered marks. Lock also retains a dark patina with some lighter areas, functions well. Stock very good with a few minor scattered marks. Brass retains a nice patina. This is a nice pistol made completely by hand in the cruder Appalachian style by a famous late maker.
