Richard Constable worked between 1815 and 1845 at 88 South Second Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He made and retailed flintlock pistols and rifles. This example was made in England and imported to America for commercial sale and retailed by Constable. English firearms were in demand as they were thought to be superior in terms of quality. This pistol has a round smoothbore steel barrel with a lug for removal, muzzle is engraved with stiff leaf borders, underside stamped with two British proofs. Rounded boxlock action with folding trigger on underside. The left side is engraved with scrolls and "CONSTABLE" in a banner. The opposite side is engraved en suite and features a banner engraved "PHILADELPHIA". The action features a reinforced cock and a sliding thumb safety which locks the frizzen shut with a pin and secures the hammer at the half-cock position. One-piece checkered walnut grip with octagonal silver wrist escutcheon. Very good condition, functions well and all steel components retain a grey patina with some scattered dark spots and light marks from use. Grip good with wear and marring to checkering. A very nice Philadelphia marked pistol!
