Made by William Rowntree in Penrith, Cumbria. Six shot barrel cluster with solid fluted ribs between each barrel, each stamped with English proof near breeches. Rowntree patent double action percussion mechanism with flat under hammer and ring trigger. Sides of actions engraved with detailed scrolls and borders, left side marked "ROWNTREE / PENRITH". Top of action and steel grip straps also engraved with scrolls and sprigs of decoration. Two piece varnished walnut grips with German silver screw escutcheons. Very good condition, grey patina overall with generous traces of thinning blue finish on barrel cluster, polished muzzle faces are still bright. Crisp action functions well, one nipple is absent. Actions with traces of case colors but have turned to silver patina, grip straps with some light marks. Grips excellent with most of the original finish, some light storage marks. A very nice example of an English pepperbox by a scarce maker.
