An interesting pair of Ketland pistols, probably made for the American market or as a secondary contract pistol. Round brass smoothbore barrels marked "LONDON" on tops with engraved borders and left sides of breeches marked with typical British proofs and also with two "P" over a possible liberty cap proofs stamped in cartouches with scalloped edges. Also, breeches engraved with stars and marked with another unknown mark of a dog. Flintlock mechanisms with detached pans and single line borders, marked "W / KETLAND / & Co." in center of each lockplate. Plain walnut stocks brass furniture engraved with single-line borders. Wooden ramrods. Other than the unusual proofs, these are typical Ketland imported pistols in all respects. With associated later, but vintage oak box with partitioned burgundy velour interior. Associated accessories include a later coffin handles Bowie knife with blacksmith forged blade and stag grips, a priming horn, a bullet mold, a key for the box, and a wooden cleaning rod. Barrels of pistols retain an unpolished patina and have very good markings, although some are stamped lightly. Locks retain a light grey patina, cock of one pistol has been replaced and has a repair, both in original flintlock configuration. Stocks very good and retain much of original finish with some scattered marks from use. Brass furniture retains a mellow unpolished patina and one sideplate has been replaced. Box has some scattered marks from use and areas of wear. Knife blade retains a dark heavy patina, other accessories in fair condition. This is a nice set that displays well. These pistols are very unusual due to the probable American proofs.
