Manufactured 1918. This incredible lot originates from the personal World War I bring backs of Lieutenant Samuel W. Evarts of Grand Rapids, Michigan, who served with the Corps of Engineers during World War I. This collection also included complete rig with 1909 and 1917 Colts, also sold in the auction. Comes with copies and original enlistment and discharge papers. This 1911, as well as the other offered Colts, remains in beautiful all-original condition, retaining 85-90% original factory finish, with the exception that both grip straps have turned a soft patina. All original parts to include vertical independent "HP" blued barrel, correct era front and rear sights, checkered wide spur hammer, long smooth trigger, smooth back strap with lanyard, checkered slide stop and safety, and flat main spring housing. Left side of frame is stamped "United States Property" with "J.M.G." inspector stamp in circle (John Gilbert). Sports original diamond checkered walnut grips with few dings. Fine bore and action. Comes with five original World War I period tempered magazines. Includes a tan web belt, two magazine canvas pouches, and original holster, a web dress belt, a World War I Doughboy helmet with painted Engineer insignia, and his original tunic with Engineer and U.S. lapel pins, all original buttons, in excellent condition. This lot, along with the two following lots from the same soldier have all survived in excellent condition. This would make a stellar collection of the three most widely used U.S. handguns during World War I.
