This is a type I musket dated 1823. It features a round smoothbore steel barrel with bayonet lug mounted on top, near muzzle and breech stamped "US/US/P" Flat flintlock lockplate with beveled edges and rounded tail section stamped vertically with date "1823". Center of lockplate stamped in an oval "W.L. EVANS/VALLEY FORGE", features a brass pan and reinforced cock. Standard type I Model 1816 steel furniture, buttplate tang stamped "US". Plain full-length walnut stock, stamped on left side, behind sideplate with partially visible inspector's cartouche. Steel ramrod. Barrel and steel components retain a freckled grey patina with some corrosion at breech and around lockplate. Lock appears to be in original flintlock configuration and shows some wear to markings in center. Stock shows heavy use and has edge wear and scattered marks from use, small chip in front of lockplate. This is a scarce and early Model 1816 musket.
