Springfield Armory manufactured a total of 311,517 of the Model 1816 muskets between 1816 and 1840. This example features a cone-in-barrel alteration to percussion using a round faced hammer. Round smoothbore steel barrel with a bayonet lug mounted on top, near muzzle and traces of marked "P / eagles head / V" at breech, tang date of 1830 partially visible. Lockplate is stamped with eagle over "US" in center and stamped "SPRING / FIELD / 1830" vertically on the tail. The musket features standard Model 1816 type III steel furniture. Plain full-length walnut stock with traces of cartouches behind sideplate and steel ramrod. All steel surfaces retain a freckled brown patina with heavier corrosion at breech and lockplate. Lock markings are very good. Refinished stock has some scattered marks from use, some edgewear and a small crack and loss behind lockplate.
