Measures 6" in length by 3" tall with a bowl diameter of 2 - 1/4". Carved from a single piece of burl wood, the front of the bowl features a large relief-carved patriotic shield with stars and stripes and inscribed with the phrase "God Save The Union" surrounded by stars. The rectangular stem is inscribed "A Morris. Co. B 29 Regt N.J. Vols" on the right side, the top inscribed "Battle Fredericksur-/Fought Dec 13 1862" and on the left side "Aquia Creek Dec. 22 1862". The entire pipe retains a smooth surface with soft brown patina and darker patina in protected areas. Shows light and honest wear from use, including some light marks and hairline age cracks. This is a very interesting and historic pipe with period inscriptions and patriotic motifs. This lot is complete with an archive of information on Morris and the 29th Regiment of the New Jersey Volunteers, including: A list of volunteers enlisted in the regiment from the Reference Department of the Morris County Library and a document on official State of New Jersey Department of Education letterhead confirming that Abraham Morris was a Corporal in Company B of the 29th Regiment of New Jersey Volunteers and that he mustered in September 3rd of 1862 and was discharged June 30, 1863. Also included are copies of papers signed by Abraham Morris while he was serving, on regimental headed paper, as well as copies of his pension letters and all documents signed by him. There is also printed information on both battles and the 29th New Jersey Regiment.
