The Model 1836 was the last U.S. martial pistol made using the flintlock mechanism. About 41,000 were manufactured between 1836 and 1844 by Asa Waters and Robert Johnson. This was the standard issue pistol for the Mexican War and many were converted to percussion for later use during the American Civil War. Round smoothbore steel barrel marked "JH/P" near breech, small brass half moon front sight and oval rear sight on tang. Flat beveled lockplate with rounded tail section, stamped in the center "U.S. / R. JOHNSON / MIDDN. CONN. / 1837", brass pan and reinforced cock. Standard Model 1836 steel furniture and replaced swivel type ramrod with button plunger. Plain walnut half-stock with two inspectors cartouches stamped behind sideplate, on left side. Stamped "H.K.C." for Henry K. Craig and "J.P.C." for James P. Chapman. Good condition, all steel components have been cleaned bright with some scattered marks and some wear to markings. Lock is in original flintlock configuration. Stock good, as refinished, with a few scattered marks from use, some edge wear, and cartouches excellent. This model is considered by many collectors to be the best made, best looking, and best performing flintlock martial pistol produced.
