These rifles were made for trading with Native Americans. They were often taken west to areas such as Denver, Colorado, where this one was found. This example has a heavy octagonal rifled steel barrel and is stamped "J.P. LOWER PHILA." on top flat, surrounded by a rocker-panel engraved border. Flat percussion lockplate is stamp-engraved and marked "PENNSYLVANIA / RIFLE WORKS" in the center. Double set triggers and plain brass furniture including target triggerguard. Wooden ramrod a period replacement. Full-length figured maple stock of familiar Pennsylvania form. This rifle is in as-found condition and has not been polished or refinished in any way, it is a very honest rifle that has seen some use. Retains a dark patina overall with scattered marks form use and some corrosion at breech and on lockplate. Some period repairs around lock. A very nice fur trade rifle in attic condition.
