On October 16th, 2008 Colt shipped a MK III Model J Frame double action revolver experimental prototype with a yellow tag with simply written "Delta" believed to be the issue name for this model if released for public. Features a heavyweight barrel, six shot, double action, fixed sights, stainless steel and furnished with checkered walnut grips, wraparound, revealing grooved backstrap, with wide spur hammer. Furnished without maker, model, caliber or rampant Colt. It appears they used the heavy barrel with stainless construction and a shorter than normal grip frame with wide spur hammer to introduce a new model for law enforcement and/or public. Obviously, it failed whatever tests were required to become a production revolver and hence, was never manufactured for public consumption. It has obviously been test fired with cylinder burn, drag line, and storage wear. Grips are excellent. The heavy barrel gives it a very solid feel and the cylinder pin is exposed. It is extremely hard to evaluate a prototype factory model that never made it to production and is basically a "one-off". It would be of great interest to any student or collector of the modern Colt double action era. While its possible more than this one experimental was made, we have no proof of it and as such, are considering this a one-of-a-kind Colt that cannot be replicated. Gun writers often use the word 'rare', but it is hard to determine what word can be correctly used with a one-of-a-kind experimental gun.
