Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, first half of the 19th century. Heavy octagonal barrel signed on top flat "J Hoak" in script. Replaced lock has been reconverted to flintlock configuration and is stamped "J & W ASTON" in center, features double set triggers. Brass furniture including a four-piece patchbox and full sideplate. Full length plain maple stock with a hickory ramrod. Jacob Hoak was listed as a freeholder gunsmith between 1809 and 1830 in Strasburg Township, Lancaster County. His name is spelled "Hoke" on tax lists of the time. He also made 68 gun locks for Pennsylvania Committee of Safety contracts. Barrel retains a brown patina with some edge wear and scattered marks, signature shows some wear. Lock retains a partially cleaned surface and has some freckling in center from percussion corrosion. Brass retains a dark patina, some applied patina on triggerguard and sideplate, sideplate probably replaced. Stock very good, as refinished, with scattered age cracks and marks from use. Overall, a very nice flintlock bench or target rifle.
