Andrew Gumpf was a gunsmith located on North Queen Street in Lancaster, Pennsylvania between 1829 and about 1849. This rifle features an octagonal barrel and is stamped "A. GOMPF/LANCASTER" on the top flat, near breech. Flat percussion lockplate with stamp engraved designs and indiscernible maker's marking in center. Double set triggers. Brass furniture includes sideplate with engraved borders on top and bottom, four-piece pierced patchbox engraved with shading and an acorn with oak leaves, possibly added later. Silver barrel key escutcheons, inlay above cheekpiece, and vacant oval wrist escutcheon. Full-length figured maple stock of Lancaster form with checkered wrist. Wooden ramrod. Barrel has an applied grey patina and shows some corrosion at breech, edge wear, and scattered marks. Rifle has been shortened during period of use. Lock retains a brown patina with some freckling. Brass and silver are polished. Stock has been refinished and shows heavy wear to checkering, some scattered marks.
