Henry Gibbs was listed in tax records as a gunsmith between 1811 and 1837 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. However, Gibbs was still practicing gunsmithing at the time of his death in 1843. This rifle has an octagonal barrel stamped "H. GIBBS/LANCASTER" on top flat, towards breech. Engraved percussion lockplate stamped "G. MOYER". Features include double set triggers and brass furniture. Rocker-panel engraved sideplate and four-piece patchbox with pierced heart finial and deeply engraved borders and designs. Barrel retained by brass keys. Full-length figured maple stock of familiar Lancaster County form and with diamond-section checkered wrist, incise carved double lines along forend terminate in a scroll design on each side. Replaced silver inlays on wrist and above cheekpiece. Barrel retains a heavy brown patina with some freckling at breech. Lock retains a brown patina with some losses on hammer around nipple. Brass retains a mellow patina. Stock has some minor age cracks and scattered light marks from use. A very nice Lancaster rifle in nice condition.
