Unmarked octagonal barrel and flat stamp-engraved lockplate marked "J.J. HENRY & SONS/BOULTON" in center. Plain brass furniture includes a two-piece patchbox fastened by screws and a Lancaster style sideplate. Barrel retained by brass keys with silver escutcheons around each on both sides of forend. Plain silver ovals inlaid on both sides of wrist and on top, large running dog and pheasant inlaid on left side of buttstock. Full-length stock of highly figured maple, checkered wrist. Wooden ramrod. Rifle was shortened slightly during period of use. Barrel retains a mostly brown patina with some edge wear. Lock has been professionally reconverted and retains a somewhat translucent brown finish. Brass and silver have been polished and coated. Stock shows some scattered marks from use, wear to checkering, and some chipping above lockplate and around tang. Other signed rifles exist by J.J. Henry that are of a similar form and with similar hardware. This rifle has wonderful striping and is very attractive. Henry is a well-known and historic maker that also made contract pistols for the U.S. government.
