Manufactured 1949. The .220 Swift was offered in the model 70 line from 1936 to 1963 but only accounts for 3.43% of production. The .220 Swift with 24" stainless barrel was considered the Medium-Heavy Barrel Varmint Model. No factory provision for a front sight. Barrel has three taps on back third of barrel and frame is tapped, this would allow for use of either the shorter or longer tube scope such has the Unertl's. There are not other sights. Features the matte finish on barrel similar to frame, straight comb checkered walnut stock with sling swivels, and checkered steel buttplate. Matching numbers etched on bolt. Barrel and frame retain approximately 98% of the original matte finish. Floorplate retains 90% of the high polish rust blue with some minor age freckles. Wood is excellent but has had some added varnish that can be seen in the checkering, and there are some areas of wear to the checkering. Fine bore and action. According to the book The Rifleman's Rifle by Roger Rule, on page 120 only 904 Varmint rifles were manufactured in .220 Swift. The 24" barrel guns were a special order. Special order barrels could be ordered to your specification from the custom shop at Winchester that was started by R.G. Owen in 1936.
