Probably mid 18th century horn engraved when dated in 1836. Curved 13" tapered horn body with carved narrow spout terminating with a rounded relief-carved ring. Top of horn engraved with vine and leaf border and inscribed "JOSEPH KINZINGER 1836". Body adorned with many nautical and folk art designs engraved throughout, including birds, an elephant, a zebra, many species of birds, deer, pigs, cattle and a vessel. Possibly meant to depict Noah's Ark, as there are nearly 20 birds, nearly 10 plant depictions, and several mammals. Other images depict Middle Eastern style buildings and churches. Replaced wooden butt and spout plug. Very good condition with a pleasing dark patina and scattered areas of light carry wear and shelf wear, along with a few minor chips and a dark area. Minor chip on spout. Overall, a great horn showing extensive history and used over a long span of time.
ENGRAVED POWDER HORN INSCRIBED JOSEPH KINZINGER DATED 1836.
