Manufactured by Massachusetts Arms Co., the Second Model was manufactured 1863 to 1865. The 9th and 11th Indiana and the 11th Tennessee were the two primary units issued these weapons during the war for Southern independence. Features an octagon to round barrel, two leaf folding rear sight. Patent dates on left side of frame and manufacturer on right. Made without forearm. Walnut buttstock bears two strong cartouches "A.J.N." for Augustus J. Noble and "J.M." for James Mills who inspected 12,040 Second Model carbines in 1864 only, which indicates this model was shipped prior to the end of the Civil War in 1864 and most probably would have seen use as this one appears. The barrel is basically brown patina. Frame is basically grey patina. Stocks are excellent with no cracks or chips and near mint cartouche. Fine action and strong, clean bore. Very pleasing example of a Civil War used Second Model Maynard.
