A total of 17,728 breechloading carbines were manufactured by Richardson & Overman, Philadelphia. The Gallager saw extensive service during the war in many Cavalry regiments, including the Ohio 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th; 13th Tennessee; and 3rd West Virginia. This is a standard model second variation. Features full round barrel, folding leaf military sight, tip-up barrel, walnut stock, patchbox, and carbine butt. All fittings are iron. All metal is brown patina. Stock is very good with light crack at wrist on right side and some repair on left side. No visible cartouche. Fine action. Clean, rifled bore. Fine, homogeneous and scarce war-used carbine.
