This is a signed J.S. Johnston signed rifle made in McConnellstown, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvannia. Rifled octagonal steel barrel signed “J.S.J.” in script for J.S. Johnston. Rifle has typical Huntingdon architecture and traits: stepped butt plate, lathe-turned triggered, original black piano finish. Patch box is a cap box with floral engraving on the lid and original patches inside. Nice engraved silver “hunter’s star” on the centerpiece. Replaced wooden ramrod. Barrel and lock retain a dark brown patina, some corosion at breech. Stock is in attic condition but at one time was broken completely through the wrist and was repaired with five screws through the top, with some wood missing and some age cracks and scattered marks along forend. Brass retains a mellow patina. Nice attic condition rifle.
