Octagonal barrel, flat, stamp engraved lockplate with roller frizzen. Pierced four piece patchbox, typical Kunz finial, engraved with stiff-leaf borders, scrolls and small panels of checkering. Toeplate has engraved pineapple finial, two piece pierced Kunz sideplate engraved en suite. Pierced and engraved silver oval inlay with Moravian star. Forend with an engraved brass tombstone winged head on each side. Full length figured maple stock with some additional faux striping, punch-dot checkered wrist and wooden ramrod with bone tip. Left side of buttstock carved with checkered circular panel surrounded by a relief fluted border with a relief daisy and scrolls, typical of other carved Kunz rifles. Thin serrated relief border surrounded barrel tang. Ramrod entry ferrule carved with stylized incised fleur-de-lis. Later Lehigh County, Pennsylvania or Philadelphia form. A rifle similar to this example with similar carving, can be seen at the Met Museum. This rifle displays all the finest details and quality of a high end Jacob Kunz rifle. Barrel retains dark brown patina with worn edges and some areas of scattered pitting especially at breech. Lock has been professionally reconverted to flintlock configuration, now retains a dark brown patina with some light pitting and wear to markings in center. Stock good, refinished and showing some wear to borders around checkered wrist and to faux striping, repaired break on bottom between lockplate and sideplate. Carving excellent on left side of buttstock, but somewhat worn around tang. Some scattered marks and scratches. Brass furniture retains a mostly polished patina.
