Two-stage steel smoothbore barrel with front sight framed by double lines on each side and signed "Kunz Philada" in script on top flat, stages separated by wedding band with roped bands on each side. Handmade American flintlock lockplate with beveled edges. Four piece brass patchbox with familiar Lehigh fleur-de-lis type finial engraved with checkered panels and scrolls, thin strips of brass inlaid on each side of lid. Faceted trigger guard with lug forward of bow and ramrod ferrules with small facets, Lehigh type sideplate with serrated arrowhead at rear tang, finely engraved and pierced toeplate with rectangular horn button for patchbox lid release. Vacant silver oval wrist escutcheon and finely engraved Moravian star inlaid in silver with a bone background and ornate silver frame above cheekpiece. Partially figured maple full length stock of Lehigh/Philadelphia form, relief molding along bottom of buttstock, wooden ramrod. Barrel retains brown patina with some pitting around breech, rear sight probably replaced, some scattered marks and dents. Lock has been professionally reconverted back to flintlock configuration, even dark grey patina with some pitting in center of lockplate. Brass retains a mellow patina with some dark areas. Stock is refinished, some scattered dents and marks from use, forend has last 15" professionally replaced. Excellent signature and engraving, overall a very nice example of Kunz's early work in Philadelphia.
