The tang on this muskatoon has the Remington patent dates and the only other markings are an inspection "R" on left side of barrel and frame, and a crown with star on rear barrel band. Based on the numbering on rear sight, we can surmise that this muskatoon was sold to Egypt. Features two barrel bands, forend cap, saber bayonet lug on right side, military post front sight and folding ladder military rear sight with Egyptian numbering. These rifles are discussed on page 135-144 in the book "Remington Rolling Block Military Rifles of the World" by Layman. The book states that the muskatoon on page 138 that only four of these have been examined. They list the muskatoon with 28" barrel and the carbine with 22 - 3/4" barrel. If this rifle was shortened from 28", the front barrel band would have had to have been moved back along with forend cap, cleaning rod, and the front sight reset, none of which appears to have been done on this carbine, or this is simply another unseen variation as this rifle appears to be all original. All metal is a grey-brown patina. Forend wood is excellent and measures 16 - 1/2". Buttstock is very good with chip out of left wrist. Very good bore and fine action.
