Gun (A) is a Model 1871 carbine. This extremely rare carbine is dated 1876-77 and is the earliest model Mauser rifle; it came under the control of Ludwig Lowe & Company in Berlin in 1887. This model is referred to as the KAR-71 and is pictured on page 159 on the "Standard Catalog of Military Firearms, 5th Edition". Matching serial number on frame, barrel, bolt, extractor, barrel band, forend tip, all screws and buttplate. Frame and trigger guard have been cleaned and have some polishing marks on trigger guard and receiver. Stock is excellent with scattered marks from use. About 50% original blue blending to gun metal grey on barrel. Period-original sling. Fine bore and action. Gun (B) is a Model 1871 rifle. This was the first military rifle produced by Peter and Wilhelm Mauser, which was established in 1869. This rifle was introduced in 1871; this model has no extractor, so shells had to be removed manually. The rear sight is graduated to 1600 meters. Weight is ten pounds. This rifle was first produced in 1875 and is dated "1875", making it a very early first year production. Matching numbers on frame, barrel, bolt, safety, rear sight, buttplate, firing pin, middle barrel band and rear barrel band. Features a right side bayonet lug, black enameled trigger guard, one-piece walnut stock and numerous German proofs. No hand guard. Missing cleaning rod. Metal basically blue-brown patina overall with freckled frame. Stock is excellent. Strong clean bore and fine action. No import stamps. Far better than average example.
