This spectacular sterling silver lidded trophy cup is hallmarked for London 1885 with silver maker's mark of Charles Stewart Harris. The base is stamped "J. W. Benson. 62 & 64. Ludgate Hill. London." Overall height is 21-1/2" and the gross weight is 2950 grams (94.8 Troy Ounces), approximately $1,500 in silver value. The cup is engraved "Presented by the Proprietors of The Daily Telegraph, 1885, All Comers Prize." Features relief chiseled acanthus leaves around the base, relief decorated foliate handles and five deeply struck English hallmarks. The reverse side of this cup is engraved "National Rifle Association. Wimbledon Meeting 1885, Won by Sergeant P. McCowan, 1st P.R.V./Score - 4555555/Tie 555." The base is tarnished, but virtually dent free. No visible repairs or dents. Features a gilt washed interior. The lid features a kneeling figural soldier with musket, measures 3". Trophy measures 13-1/2" at its widest point. A stunning over-sized Sterling silver early National Rifle Association trophy. From the Ray Bentley Collection.
