In the book "The Government Models" by Goddard, on page 174, this Sporting Model is listed as serial No. 4501, engraved "JS" on guard, stub hammer, shipped to Montgomery Ward on July 22nd, 1902. This early model features the front slide serrations, round butt, round checkered hammer and Colt gutta percha grips. Includes an original 1884 stamped magazine. We can find no sign of "JS" having been inscribed on trigger guard. Entire gun is basically grey patina with age freckling and some scattered salt and pepper texture. Grips show wear. Fine action. Strong, clean bore. Nice attic-find first year production with very good legends.
