Serial numbered on barrel "914", however numbered on lower tang with actual serial number of "1414". This First Model Henry rifle has seen extensive use and a strong possibility of having been war-time utilized. The Henry rifle was a favorite of numerous militias and cavalry units during the war of Northern Aggression. Many of these rifles were privately purchased by local organizations and donors. This rifle has seen tremendous amount of use with a heavily worn receiver, with evidence of a broken upper tang that has been period repaired. The buttstock is a contemporary replacement that is void of a cleaning rod trap. The rear sight is a semi-buckhorn pattern and appears to be of period. After detailed disassembly all screws were found to be of later replacements. Buttplate is an appropriate and authentic First Model buttplate, however it is not numbered to this rifle. Serial number on barrel is a recent addition and as previously noted, does not match tang. Bolt and extractor are of a more recent manufacture. Lever lock and sling swivels are of contemporary manufacture and possibly installed during the restoration of this rifle. Evidence of draw filing on forward portion of barrel and at serial number, which appears to have been done during the same period of restoration. This rifle would be a nice addition to one's Civil War collection or collection of Southwestern American Expansion.
