There were only about 300 of these early 1879 rifles had actions made by Sharps for the U.S. Navy. Prior to Sharps shutting down in 1880, they had only completed 300 actions, which were turned over to E. Remington & Sons for completion. This Model was referred to as the "First Model". Round blued steel barrel retained by two bands, breech stamped "W.W.K./U.S./anchor" for inspector William W. Kimble. The first rifle in the shipment of three hundred was serial number 9, making this a very early rifle. Front sight/bayonet lug and Springfield Armory supllied adjustable rear ramp sight graduated to 1,300 yards. Blued action with proper Lee Patent markings and serial number, top of bolt, back of bolt, right side of trigger, bottom of floorplate, and top of action stamped "H.N." for Henry Nettleton. Blued magazine with flat sides. Steel furniture. Plain walnut stock. Complete with correct steel cleaning rod. This rare Navy longarm is in good condition, overall. The barrel retains a mostly brown patina. Action retains a mostly brown patina with generous traces of blue finish in protected areas. Markings are very good, action is strong and functions well, bore very good, mostly shiny with some minor spotting. Magazine retains about 70-80% thinning blue finish and furniture mostly turned to grey with generous traces of blue in protected areas. Stock is good but has an added coat of varnish. A very rare U.S. Navy Martial longarm!
