This is a standard U.S. issue Saddle Ring Carbine from the Indian Wars period. This is one of about 20,000 made and is in the early pre-1876 serial range under 43,700. Standard 1873 carbine stamped rear sight, original saddle ring bar and ring, single band. Block is stamped “U.S. / MODEL / 1873”. Left side of walnut stock has an early and clear "ESA" cartouche for inspector Erskine S. Allin. Has clear encircled script “P” on wrist. Proper buttplate with no trapdoor and original walnut stock. This is a very good, solid, as found all original trapdoor carbine. Metal is a soft mix of blue and brown patina with some generous traces of blue finish in protected areas. Wood is very good to excellent with no cracks or chips and some scattered marks from use overall. Fine action. Good bore with visible rifling and some areas of spotting.
