A total quantity of 3,007 of these rifles were made in 1865 by Springfield Armory. The actions were supplied by Joslyn Firearms Company to Springfield Armory where they were assembled on newly made Infantry rifles made specifically for this action. The locks were most likely altered from the 1863 type. The walnut stock is of original manufacture designed specifically for the Joslyn breech. It is believed that some of these were issued to Union forces before the end of the Civil War but no record exists for actual combat use. This rifle features a round rifled steel barrel with standard 1863 Model sights, case hardened Joslyn breech serial numbered on top and stamped on back with Joslyn patent markings and dates. Number on tang matches breech. Case hardened lockplate dated 1864 at tail and stamped in center with large eagle and "U.S. SPRINGFIELD". Standard Model 1863 steel furniture. Plain walnut stock with partially visible cartouche on left side and steel ramrod. Good condition; barrel retains a cleaned, bright surface with some dark spotting. Breech and lock retains traces of case colors, mostly tuned to brown or silver. Bore is very good and action is crisp and functions well. Furniture is bright with some scattered marks. Stock good with scattered marks and denting, as well as a few minor age cracks.
