Features round tapered barrel with German silver blade front sight and Marbles commercial rear sight. No barrel markings are evident. Receiver bridge marked "CAL 40" and is believed to be .40-70 Bullard or .40-60 Winchester. Left side of receiver is marked "BULLARD REPEATING ARMS COMPANY, SPRINGFIELD MASS, U.S.PAT.AUG. 16 1881". Serial number is marked on receiver to rear of hammer. Two piece American walnut stocks with steel forend cap and Bullard hard rubber buttplate. Very good to fine condition. Barrel and magazine retain 40% mottled thinning factory applied blue finish with balance turning plumb. Receiver retains over 60% factory applied blue finish with typical finish wear and striations of patina and blue finish mixed. Dust cover is a very mellow patina overall. Buttstock while complete has a period repair at wrist with several pegs installed to stabilize a much earlier fracture. Forearm is very fine with most varnish remaining. With a total of only 10,000 to 12,000 the survival rate of these rifles is very small making this example a far better than average example.
