Made between 1862 and 1865 with a quantity of about 8,000 made; only 6,686 were for Navy purchase. Round steel barrel with leather covering secured by two screws at breech. These were believed to have seen extensive Naval use on various vessels, which is why many have severely damaged leather. Lever action is stamped "SHARPS / & / HANKINS / PHILADA" on right side and "SHARPS / PATENT / 1859" on left side. Brass buttplate, otherwise steel hardware. Walnut buttstock stamped with a small "W. DUNCAN" cartouche on left side of wrist. Good condition, leather cover a probable contemporary replacement with great aged patina and crazing. Frame with traces of silvered case colors and scattered freckling and pitting overall, probably due to salt exposure on ships. Markings are good to very good. Action functions well and bore is very good with deep rifling and only minor black powder corrosion. Stock good, as refinished, scattered marks from use overall and some wear. A very nice example of a scarce carbine!
